How we count
Tokens
Your prompt is counted in your browser with OpenAI's o200k tokenizer (the open-source js-tiktoken library). Nothing is uploaded: there is no server behind the calculator and no AI model reads your text. Until the tokenizer finishes loading, the count is a quick estimate of one token per four characters.
For OpenAI models the count is exact. Other providers use their own tokenizers, so for them it is an estimate. Anthropic, for example, says its tokenizer for Claude 4.7 and later produces about 30% more tokens for the same text than its older one.
Replies
A reply's length depends on the model and the task, so we show a range for a typical reply, thinking included. The effort setting picks the range:
- Low: 150–500 tokens
- Medium: 400–1200 tokens
- High: 1000–4000 tokens
These ranges are our own assumption, not provider figures. The big number on the ticket uses the middle of the range.
Prices
We use each provider's standard-tier API list price, taken from its own pricing page and dated. Where a long prompt moves to a higher rate, the calculator switches tiers at the provider's stated limit. Announced price rises take effect on their date in your browser. Batch, priority, regional and cached pricing are not included in the main figure.

Subscription plans
Tell the calculator which plan you pay for and the ticket shows how much of it one prompt uses. No vendor publishes the size of a session or a usage pool, so be careful with these numbers:
- Claude plans show a share of a 5-hour session. Anthropic only publishes multiples (Max is 5x Pro, Ultra has no 5-hour limit). The Pro session size is our estimate: about 45 messages, a widely cited outside figure, at about 2,000 tokens a message. Real limits also depend on the model and how long your chats are.
- ChatGPT Pro shows the share of its monthly API credits, which is exact: the prompt's API price against the credit.
- Plans with no published limit (ChatGPT Free, Go and Plus, the Cursor + Grok plans) say so, and show how many prompts like yours the plan's price would buy at API prices instead.
- Claude Free, free: Anthropic says Pro gives at least 5x Free usage. Pro's session size is our estimate (see Claude Pro).
- Claude Pro, $20 a month: Anthropic publishes no number. About 45 messages per 5-hour session is a widely cited outside estimate; we assume about 2,000 tokens a message.
- Claude Max, $100 a month: 5x Pro usage every 5 hours (claude.com/pricing), applied to our Pro estimate.
- Claude Ultra, $200 a month: No 5-hour limit for verified accounts, and 10x Pro usage every week. Anthropic doesn't publish the weekly size.
- ChatGPT Free, free: Unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails. Tools and uploads are limited, with no published numbers.
- ChatGPT Go, $6 a month: Unlimited text chats, more messages with tools. OpenAI doesn't publish the limits.
- ChatGPT Plus, $20 a month: "Limits apply", and OpenAI doesn't publish them.
- ChatGPT Pro, from $120 a month: Chat is unlimited subject to guardrails. Includes up to $600 a month in API credits for your own apps.
- Cursor + Grok Plus, $8 a month: One weekly usage pool shared across Cursor and Grok. Its size isn't published.
- Cursor + Grok Premium, $30 a month: 4x Plus usage, refreshed weekly. Third-party models in Cursor are billed at API list price.
- Cursor + Grok Super, $100 a month: 15x Plus usage, refreshed weekly. Third-party models are billed at API list price.
- Cursor + Grok Ultra, $200 a month: 50x Plus usage, refreshed weekly. Third-party models are billed at API list price.
- Google AI Plus, $7.99 a month: 2x the usage limits of no AI plan. Google doesn't publish the sizes. US price from launch coverage; Google prices AI plans per region.
- Google AI Pro, $19.99 a month: 4x the usage limits of no AI plan, 5 TB storage. Sizes not published.
- Google AI Ultra 5x, $99.99 a month: 5x AI Pro's usage limits. Sizes not published.
- Google AI Ultra 20x, $199.99 a month: 20x AI Pro's usage limits. Sizes not published.
Water per prompt
The water drop next to the headline shows how much water a prompt uses, as the provider itself has published it. Only three have published a figure, and each measures something different, so don't compare them with each other:
- Google: 0.26 mL per median Gemini text prompt. Google's own measurement of serving a prompt in its data centres. Source, 21 Aug 2025.
- OpenAI: 0.32 mL per average ChatGPT query. Stated by Sam Altman as 0.000085 gallons, with no method published. Source, 10 Jun 2025.
- Mistral: 45 mL per 400-token Le Chat reply. Life-cycle analysis with Carbone 4 and ADEME, marginal inference impact. Source, 22 Jul 2025.
Providers with a greyed-out drop haven't published a per-prompt water figure. Nobody publishes water per token, so we don't scale these numbers to your prompt's length.

A sponsor can buy a clearly labelled slot under the results. Sponsors never change the results, the order of the table or what we write about a model.
